I had a great experience seeing Dr. Gultz. The mood in the office is super mellow and the staff and dr. put me at such ease I forgot I was seeing a dentist! I felt like he took out his time for me and that's something I place great importance on. He's a keeper!

This is THE dental clinic I will highly recommend people around me to visit. Dr. Gultz and his team are outstanding both professionally and morally. I started to visit Dr. Gultz in January this year, and I hope I visited here two years ago. The whole team is very friendly and good at what they are doing. They explain, they suggest for patients' benefit, and when they sense patients have questions, they care. Everyone here, dentists, dental assistants and administrative staff are ready to help. You can feel the pleasant culture at the moment you walk into it.

Big help on my toothache I had a terrible toothache. I called to schedule an emergency appointment. Even though I was a new patient, they got me in on an emergency appointment at a very reasonable price. The staff is very friendly and they seem like they actually care! Thanks Dr Mark Paean and staff.

Thank you for your expert care. You and your assistant made my experience pleasant. I always felt you were aware of my comfort and feelings. I appreciate the professionalism of your staff and the "perfect" outcome.

Many years ago when in Clinton, NJ, a contractor told me he went to a dentist near my office in Newark. He asked if I knew Doug Gultz, the dentist. I didn't but needed one. He told me he drove everyone in his family from Pennsylvania to have him take care of them. That seemed pretty outstanding, so next time I needed a cleaning, Gultz was the place for me.

Dr. Gultz has a fantastic team: helpful, kind staff at the front desk; friendly, professional dentists; and even Dr. Gultz himself, who is a totally awesome, down-to-Earth guy who loves chatting up a storm. Everyone here is an absolute pleasure to interact with. My family has been going to his office for 20+ years and we have nothing but high praise for his team.

This place is so good that I travel from Queens/Manhattan to Newark to get my dental work done here. Here's why:
When I used to live in northern NJ, I was searching for a dentist on an emergency basis due to what inevitably required a root canal performed on me. A friend used to work here, referred them, and so I went. Little did I know that I would be thrust upon some of the most wonderful administrative and clinical staff I'd ever meet.

Dr Gultz and his staff are bar none the best dentist practice in the area. Best administrative staff, always happy, always efficient, always clean and always care. I wouldn't recommend any other practice.

I moved out to California in 2010, but conveniently find myself back in New Jersey every 6 months for college reunions and holidays with the family. Instead of searching for a dentist that would not live up to Dr. Gultz, I just make sure to schedule a visit when I'm back east.
I'll have to ask during my next visit, but I think I have the longest commute to his office -- 6 hours on a plane!

His offices are very nice, taking up an entire Ironbound row house with a small parking lot (weather permitting, I ride my bike and there is a fence to lock your bike to). The atmosphere is pleasant with friendly receptionists. Not only do they help with scheduling visits, they call to remind me the day before. On top of that, you can count on them to recommend Portuguese restaurants in the area.
On top of all this - DOUG GULTZ IS A FANTASTIC DENTIST!!! He also has specialists come in like dental surgeons and periodontist. You cannot go wrong with this place.

As I had my initial work done, they began to perform other standard check-up related items. Since I hadn't gone to the dentist in several years (yeah, gross...I know), it turned out I had a bunch of other problems (another potential root canal, a crown replacement, some cavities) and because I thought they did good work I decided to keep going back. After about a half-dozen more visits over the next 4-6 months, I'm sure they got to know me a little bit.
Yet the practice is located in the heart of the Ironbound section of Newark and they seem to know every single family there. Their front desk staff are incredibly attentive, seem to know everyone by name, the dental assistants are friendly, and the doctors I've seen (Lightman and Gultz) have always been very warm and friendly. Bottom line: they care. They care about your welfare and your comfort. And thanks to them, I'm now back on a regular every-6-month check-up.
Fast forward 2 years (and yes I was going back for my regular check ups during this time) and a move to Queens later, I had to schedule another check-up. I used to be able to go during any time when I was in NJ but I had taken a liking to a particular dentist and with such a long way to go just to get there, scheduling became a pain and I could now only go on a particular evening when that dentist was there. We finally worked out an appointment, I go, get checked up, no problems are found, and go on my merry way. But here's where it gets interesting and what really throws them over the top for me...
I scheduled my next appointment 6 months later (again, living in Queens), call the office and say "hey this is Brian [last name], and I wanted to schedule a check-up". To my absolute surprise the scheduling assistant immediately remembered me, remembered that I preferred to see a specific physician, and remembered I could only make it on a specific night because I was coming from outside of NJ. I mean....wow! Considering it feels like they know the entire city of Newark, I have to say I was incredibly impressed with that level of customer service! Then, when I go back, my conversations with my dentist -while expectedly not very deep- are nice because he remembers little things we've discussed in the past. All of my experiences with this office make me feel like a person first and not "just another patient". You just can't put a price tag on that level of customer service and that's why to this day I still perform the "reverse-commute" and go 45-60min out of my way just for a trip to the dentist.

As a future dental student, I have been to over 15 different dental offices. Dr. Douglas B. Gultz has out of all the practices I have been to, one of the most well-maintained practices with a newly implemented digital x-ray equipment and a parking lot for patient convenience. Patients literately travel great distances to see Dr. Gultz and his illustrious staff which include administrative assistants that remember the patient's name, the name of their family members and the name of the patient's youngest daughter's teddy bear she got last Christmas because she brought him to the office; not by their chart number; dental assistants who work so efficiently that characterizing them as a "well-oiled machine" would not even begin to depict their skillfulness; general dental practitioners who not only love what they do but are nothing less but outstanding at their skill, and specialty dental practitioners who in my opinion should be nationally renowned but it's only a matter of time.
When I visit dental offices, I rate a dental practice according to many different levels none of which include the amount of things I learn during my time in the office. When I learn something, it is just an advantage for myself. I rate an office according to the staff's ability of efficiency to work together in a manner which allows a patient to leave grinning from ear to ear, proudly displaying their dentition. Dr. Gultz and his staff received a 5/5 for that part of the test. Another rating I give an office is their ability to inspire me to continue my pursuit of dentistry. A dental practitioner that can motivate another prospective dental student to work hard towards dentistry after practicing dentistry for over 33 years is a dentist who not only loves their career and their admirable skill but they love it so much that they want it to continue for future generations and take pride in their career. This pride and dedication to their profession is seen when patients walk out smiling due to a job excellently well-done. Dr. Gultz and his staff received a 10/5 rating since I am excited to attend dental school more than ever now.
I do not only highly recommend Dr. Douglas B. Gultz's practice for all patients in the Tri-State area, I recommend his entire staff as well because all the dental and administrative assistants, the hygienists, Dr. Tracy Lipson, Dr. Kate Diana, Dr. Mitesh Faldu, Dr. Mark Schachman, Dr. Torin Rutner, and Dr. Ellen Katz have all set new standards for dentistry and inspire fellow prospective dental students such as myself to follow in their footsteps.
